Abstract

Ardebil is Due to its geographical and strategic location, one of the most important capital of the state of Azerbaijan, as well as a crossroads of communication in economic and commercial exchanges in historical geography texts. The main question is: what geographic variables affect the formation, expansion and decline of the city in the early Islamic centuries until the end of the Safavid period? The hypotheses of this research have been criticized and studied based on the findings of the Basta-Nation and historical approaches in the study of written sources Based on the results of this research, it can be said that the city of Ardebil in the early Islamic centuries was considered as the first and the most important city and capital of the state of Azerbaijan. The sources of water and energy and man-made objects (communication paths and gates) made it possible to form it in the early centuries of the Islamic era. After the invasion of the Greeks and the Mongols, the city lost some of its past flourishing, so that the significance of the city was no longer mentioned, but during the Safavid period, due to the importance of the Sheikh Safi shrine for the kings of this period, this again The city retrieved the past prosperity, which was made possible by the accumulation of wealth through the revival of communication paths and the collection of endowments for this tomb from different parts of the region and beyond.
